Shooting for the visually impaired

At the Centre we offer the opportunity for the visually impaired to participate in Air Rifle shooting.  This is carried out in a safe environment, for the shooter to enjoy the challenges of target shooting.

The equipment used is a standard match rifle, with the added combination of a light sensor, headphones, and specially adapted targets. The shooter, by wearing headphones is able to differentiate between the sounds produced by the amount of reflected light on the target, which is dependent on the scoring rings. This requires skill in learning the slight differences in tone and relating this to body position.

There are two disciplines; supported and free-standing. Supported shooters use a sprung stand. This enables the shooter who may through other disabilities, be unable to support the weight of the rifle alone. Freestanding means the shooter supports the rifle unassisted.  An assistant is provided for loading and initial alignment

Since the introduction of this discipline at Wolverhampton, we have a Visually Impaired British Championship and Postal League.  This brings competitors from Scotland, Wales, and all parts of England, with interest being showed from Northern. Ireland.  There are opportunities to participate in international competitions.
